Live streaming is the number one in thing in China right now, with celebs like Lu Han, Fan Bingbing and Yang Mi cashing in on the trend. Apart from being a very good source of revenue ( we’re talking millions), an unexpected side benefit is that it can even propel you to international fame. Local getai singer Wang Lei, aka 'Fish Selling Bro' is just one example of the power of live streams.

However, it’s not exactly easy to break into the super crowded live streaming community. Just ask veteran Hongkong actor Gallen Lo, who recently held his first live stream. The 57-year-old actor has nearly 880,000 followers on Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, but when he went live for the very first time on June 15, barely 20,000 fans tuned in.
