Him Law On Why He Wants Wife Tavia Yeung To Go Back To Work Even Though He Can’t Handle Both Their Kids Himself

They say fatherhood really changes a man and TVB actor Him Law is the perfect example of that.

Walking through the door in his black deep V-neck sweater and his head of casually tousled hair, the 38-year-old gives off a more mature vibe then we expected when 8days.sg met him for an interview in March.

Perhaps it was the deep-rooted impression we have of Him as the reckless and bratty rookie doctor in 2012 TVB drama The Hippocratic Crush, but in person, he was surprisingly mellow... and yes, dad-like.

You know that feeling when your dad is trying to have a serious conversation with you and you try to avoid eye contact with him? That's how we felt during our chat with the actor when he was in town for the Let’s Talk About Health Fair 2023

He has such an intense stare that we couldn't help but wonder if that's how Him looks at his two children, Hera, three and Eden, one, with Tavia Yeung?

Him and Tavia with their two adorable children

8DAYS.SG: Welcome to Singapore! We know you have two kids and it's not easy to distribute your time equally between both of them. Do you find your kids fighting for you and your wife's attention?

I think my elder daughter does. Since the arrival of her younger brother, she hopes that we will give her more attention. But we can tell that she really dotes on her brother too. Meanwhile, my son's still too young. He just turned one so he's not as expressive as his sister.

That said, as parents, this is an issue we're very concerned about. Thankfully it isn't very serious, and they are very happy when they play together. Especially now that [my son] is one and can walk on his own, they've been interacting a lot more.

Did you and Tavia do anything to help ease Hera into sisterhood?

We did. When her brother was born, we bought a gift and told her it was from him. Actually she was barely one at that time, so she probably did not understand what that was for (laughs). She probably doesn't even remember that her brother gave her a present (guffaws).

Tavia took a break from work to be a full-time mum, so are your children closer to her?

To be honest, not really. When I'm not filming, my wife and I would send our daughter to school together every day and then two of us will go on a date. We'll have breakfast, shop around or watch a drama in our car. It's great actually 'cos we get to spend more time alone.

Him thinks Hera looks more like him, what do you guys think?

Now that Hera's more grown up and her personality is starting to show, is she more like you or Tavia?

Who do you think she looks like? (Chuckles) At first glance, my daughter's features resemble mine. Her eyebrows are very thick and her eyes are big.

Personality wise, she's like me too. We're more emotional. Sometimes we can be very happy and sometimes we're sad, and we're very sensitive.

Between you and Tavia, is there a good and a bad cop?

My wife is stricter but she told me that she needs me to be more stern. She hopes that it isn't just one person who is the bad cop.

How are you like when it comes to educating your kids?

I remember there was one time, my daughter was throwing tantrums and because she didn't want to eat. She was spitting out and throwing her food so I brought her into the room and punished her by making her stand in a corner.

I didn't hit her and I didn't leave after punishing her. I told her: "Daddy will accompany you. Daddy will stand with you."

At least they get to sneak in some couple time when their daughter's at school

Everyone has been hoping for Tavia to go back to acting. Do you encourage her to do so too?

She has to because I want to watch her act too, and I want to work with her again. I worked with her in Modern Dynasty last year, and I felt that it was very challenging. When we're communicating at home, we're always doing it as parents, but when we are filming, we can take on different roles. I think this is great for our relationship as well.

You guys did not play a couple in Modern Dynasty. If given a choice, would you want to act as a couple?

We can be a couple, but it has to be a comedy (laughs).

If Tavia goes back to filming now, will you be able to handle both your kids by yourself?

I can't (laughs). My son is great but he doesn't sleep well. Sometimes he wakes up at 2 or 3am. It's been tough on [Tavia] since she has to take care of our daughter during the day and doesn't get to sleep at night 'cos of our son. But many of our friends tell us: "It's okay, once you get past these few years you'll be done".

Guess Him is intending to stop at two for now?

Would you guys consider having a third kid?

We'll leave it up to fate. We don't have plans for another child but if it happens, it happens.

Tavia once said she prefers going to work because being a full-time mum is even more tiring than filming. Have you guys considered switching roles and you be a full-time dad instead?

That's what we've been doing actually! Most of the time when she's working, I'm not and when I'm working, she doesn't have to.

But asking me to take care of them both at the same time is the hard part. (Laughs) Luckily our family has old folks so they can help out.
