M’sian Celeb Hero Tai Angry At Pregnant Wife For Racking Up S$700 Electricity Bill 'Cos She Leaves Air Con On All Day

Hero is famously frugal, calculating every expense down to the cost of a single diaper.

This is a problem that many couples can probably relate to.

Taiwan-based Malaysian actor-host Hero Tai, 38, and his wife, Ukrainian model Tatiana Marchyshyna, 24, recently revealed on Taiwanese variety show Chop Chop Show that their clashing views on money have been a major source of tension in their marriage.

“Our views on money are completely different. I’m trying to save money, but she’s busy spending it. From daily groceries to baby formula, diapers and baby food, I manage all the expenses myself. But the real issue is she’s unwilling to communicate about it,” he lamented.

He had previously complained about her expensive coffee drinking habits, while she reproached him for making her fly economy when she was pregnant.

Their latest spat? Tatiana’s habit of keeping the air-conditioning on all day, which resulted in a jaw-dropping NT$16,000 (S$700) electricity bill.

Since Tatiana, who’s expecting their second child, spends most of her time at home with their one-year-old daughter Karina, Hero confronted her about the high bill. But Tatiana insisted it couldn’t be helped.

She also noted that daytime electricity rates are higher than at night, but added she needs the AC running during the day.

When the host teased Hero about being stingy, he replied: Do you know how many diapers and cans of baby formula I can buy with NT$16,000 (S$700)?”

Tatiana defended herself: “It’s really too hot. What do you expect me to do? Not use the AC? And we have a child.”

Hero said he researched energy-saving tips online, like using fans with the AC to lower the temperature, but Tatiana refused to try them.

Tatiana shot back, criticising Hero’s frugal habits: “The way he spends money is ridiculous. He calculates everything — this diaper costs NT$5 (22 cents), that one NT$6 (26 cents). Why waste so much time? Just grab whatever. I’ll buy whichever one I like.”

Hero countered: “The other day she just grabbed one that costs NT$15 (67 cents) per diaper! The ones I buy are just over NT$5 (22 cents) per piece.”

Tatiana explained her choice, saying the pricier brand was marketed as being gentler on babies’ sensitive skin, but Hero still wasn’t convinced.

In the end, though, Hero relented and paid the bill — perhaps, for the sake of peace at home.
