Here’s How Malaysian Stars Are Reacting To The Malaysia General Election Results

Namewee is no stranger to criticism in his hometown. The Malaysian rapper has always been vocal against the BN coalition in several of his songs — which has resulted in a lot of well-publicised drama. After the election results, Namewee wrote on his Facebook, “It's been 10 years. I’ve had a case opened against me six times, been arrested twice, been detained twice, been charged twice, been sentenced once, been prosecuted once, been reported and protested against over 10 times, been detained in the airport eight times. I’m just a filmmaker [and] musician... Today, Malaysia has finally changed. I can’t sleep, having very strong emotions. Maybe no one wants to know, only my tears know... Morning, new Malaysia.”

Namewee also posted a Facebook video mocking BN for their loss during the election. In the video, the rapper is seen in a mock press con setting (complete with camera shutter sound effects) and wearing glasses resembling handcuffs. He said, “Right here, I’d like to make a very important announcement to all Malaysians. On May 5 2018, we’ll witness the birth of the most powerful and experienced opposition party in the history of Malaysia for 61 years. The greatness of this opposition party has never been witnessed before or in the future. This powerful opposition party will lead Malaysians in the next five years in monitoring the new government through their great experience and skills, especially in terms of corruption, abuse of power, and the use of dirty tricks during elections. They are very knowledgeable and familiar with all of the above, and there’s absolutely no way for the new government to violate the law. Last but not least, I’d like to congratulate the establishment of the most experienced and most capable opposition party in dealing with corruption. Also, I’d like to urge all Malaysians to give full cooperation and support to the greatest opposition party. For the next five years, we rely on you. Our spirit will always be with you.”

Nothing says that one is more #proudtobemalaysian than drinking from a clear plastic bag while flaunting an inked finger after voting, as shown by Malaysian singer Fish Leong. The Taiwan-based singer had flown back to her hometown specially to vote. After the results, Fish simply wrote on her Facebook “United” along with a YouTube cover of ‘Sejahtera Malaysia’.

Who says birthday wishes don’t come true? Malaysian singer Z-Chen who turned 45 on May 8 revealed on his Facebook that the election outcome was what he had wished for on his birthday. After the election result, he excitedly expressed, “Finally can take off my red underwear and go to sleep.” Yes, his choice of underwear colour was for good luck.

On May 8, Taiwan-based Malaysian singer Nicholas Teo shared this picture on FB of him specially flying home to vote, with the caption: “On my way home. It's necessary to make this trip home.”

Nic also shared this photo of his ink-stained finger after voting. The singer had accompanied his parents to the polling station to cast their votes.

Yup, Nic’s reaction to the shocking election result is basically every Malaysian’s. The singer captioned this picture with a simple “Good night” along with two hearts and a crying face emoji. His manager said, “[Nicholas] is very happy to be able to witness such a historic moment. [He’s] looking forward to a ‘new Malaysia’.”

On May 9, Malaysian actress-singer Angelica Lee posted this photo on her Facebook with the caption: “Early morning, and the airport is packed with Malaysian passengers who have returned home to vote. I was overcome with emotion.”

After the election result, Angelica wrote on her Facebook, “Malaysia, good morning!” along with two winkey eye emojis. Netizens left comments like, “The feeling today is even 'newer' than Lunar New Year. Even the air feels fresher.”

“Thank God for answering our prayers!” wrote Guang Liang on his Facebook page post-election result. In an interview with Apple Daily, the Malaysian singer’s manager said that voting was a nerve-wracking experience for him. "Guang Liang was very nervous when he was casting his vote,” his manager said. “His palms were sweaty, and he repeatedly checked [his ballot paper] as he was worried that it might be the wrong ticket.”

On May 8, Victor Wong, aka Pin Guan, had specially flown to Taiwan to grace Daniel Chan’s press con for his upcoming concert. The very next day, he flew back to Malaysia to vote. When he was at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, he was worried that he wouldn’t be able to make it in time to vote. Thankfully, traffic was smooth and he made it. He also revealed that his whole family didn’t sleep that night as they were anticipating the results. On May 9, he wrote on his Facebook, “No matter how many ‘potholes’ this country has, it's still the place that I was bred in and that nourished me. I also do my little part [to vote]. Looking forward to the results that everyone is looking for.”

On May 10, Pin Guan shared this picture on his Facebook along with the caption, “Just woke up and saw that the sky today is particularly beautiful. The air also seems to have become fresher overnight. Five years ago, on 5 May 2013, I had difficulty sleeping. Yesterday, May 9, I was too excited to sleep. Everyone’s spirit of unity and patriotism is too inspiring [and] created this historic moment in Malaysia. But it’s enough to be excited for just one day. Looking forward to the new government taking care of the people’s well-being… I believe Malaysia will get better and better.”

Langkawi-born Jesseca Liu also took to IG to bask in the celebratory mood. She posted this pic with the simple caption “Good morning, Malaysia!” It’s a good morning, indeed, for Malaysians.

Former Ch 8 Malaysian actress Apple Hong, who got hitched to a Singaporean businessman last year and now lives here, also returned to her hometown to vote. She shared this pic with the caption: “Praise God! #Malaysiaboleh! Well done #Malaysians! Salute to Tun Mahathir! When he launched his Vision 2020 back in 1999, he really meant it! Let's build a better Malaysia together!”

Former Ch 8 actress Chris Tong, who has been pursuing an acting career in China, shared this pic of her filming in a forest somewhere in Hengdian with the caption: “Spot my finger? Haha.. Am ready.. Yesterday, from getting up at 5am to get my make-up done, I was staring at my schedule all day long. To finish this fight scene would require four days. And I only have two days. The set was full of chaos. The fight choreographer wanted to shoot in sequence, but the director was forced to shoot out of order ’cos of me. The coordinator was personally on-site to push filming along. The producer was worried about having to retake shots. In the end, everyone asked, ‘What’s the reason that you absolutely must go?’ Maybe this is the emotional tie that only Malaysians will be able to understand.” Now for those Malaysians that didn’t vote, what’s your excuse?

Even when she’s back in Beijing for work, her heart is still in Malaysia. On May 11, Chris shared this pic on her IG along with a lengthy muse on how she has been keeping up to date with the live news broadcasts on the Malaysia GE since landing in Beijing the night before. She wrote: “I could completely feel how much I love my hometown! For the past six to seven years that I’ve been working in Singapore, many people have asked me, ‘Why don’t you apply for PR or citizenship?’ Recently, a lot of people have asked me, ‘You spend most of your time working abroad. Why are you still so anxious? Why insist on going back to vote?’ I guess this is the voice of us wanderers… Actually, all of us want to go home! Last night, we’ve already proven our faith and persistence to the entire world! ’Cos I’m Malaysian, I’ve never stopped believing! ... I'm thankful that I grew up in this era where I got to witness an unprecedented moment in Malaysian history… Thank you for the leaders who fought for this land. Thank you that you guys never gave up, and will lead us to a better tomorrow!”

Chris was ecstatic with the results and he posted this photo of a triumphant Mahathir. "The future of Malaysia is counting on you! You can do it!"
