Unlike last week, where it was obvious who the front-runners were, the second Star Search 2019 semi-final was a lot more unpredictable. There were at least eight contestants who deserved a spot in the finals on November 3 but sadly, only six could make it through. Does it mean that last week’s semi-finalists lucked out? Possibly? Or maybe it’s ’cos this week’s hopefuls had seven more days to psyche themselves up, which definitely showed in their improv performances.
Tonight’s 12 semi-finalists had to compete over three rounds: the first, a dance segment that proved not everyone can get down, the second, where they got judged for their performance in a WeMovie, this time co-starring Star Search 1997 winner Florence Tan, and the third, a spontaneous acting round that’s possibly the most sweat-inducing, nerve-racking thing to watch on screen in 2019. Watching the contestants take on the improv acting challenge was like watching a car crash about to happen — you just can’t look away even though you know what’s coming might not be pleasant. We can’t imagine the stress the contestants were under, and while some performances were indeed cringey, you can’t deny that they give it their all. And for that everyone deserves praise.
