'90s Singer Fang Jiwei Had To Remove Her High Heels When She Acted With Stephen Chow In God Of Gamblers III, Says She Didn’t Know He Was 1.7m Tall
The singer, who is 1.73m tall, towered over the comedy legend in high heels.
During a recent appearance on music show Na Xie Nian Na Xie Ge (which can be translated as Those Songs From Those Years), Taiwanese singer Fang Jiwei (方季惟), 54, reminisced about the time she starred in God of Gamblers III: Back to Shanghai (1991) opposite Hongkong comedy legend, Stephen Chow, 59.
The singer, who is 1.73m tall, said she specially wore high heels for the movie because she wanted to look more perfect.
However, there was just one issue: Stephen is 1.7m tall and she towered over him with her heels on.
Jiwei said she quickly removed her heels, averting a potential embarrassing situation for the actor.
“I didn’t know Stephen was shorter than 1.76m,” joked Jiwei on the show.
Back in the '90s, Jiwei was dubbed the "Dream Lover of Soldiers" because of her sweet, girl-next-door looks and catchy songs which were very popular among guys in the military.
So well-loved was Jiwei, that once, during an appearance at a navy base to meet and greet her fans, the navy's commander-in-chief himself turned up to support her.
After hearing that Jiwei missed her younger brother, who was serving in the navy then, the commander-in-chief immediately arranged for her younger brother to come meet her at the event.
According to Jiwei, her brother, who much preferred to keep things lowkey, said to her: “Why are you looking for me?”.
