Ekin Cheng Practised For A Week Just To Say 6 Words In Hokkien For An Ad

Can't say he didn't put in effort.

Like many of his fellow Hongkong celebs, Ekin Cheng, 55, is more comfortable speaking Cantonese.

That’s not to say that Ekin isn’t trying to improve his command of Mandarin. The actor-singer is now in Taiwan to act in his first drama series since 2018 — mystery drama The Internet Celebrity.

Ekin, who has already been there for three months, recently landed a commercial, where he has a line in Taiwanese Hokkien. To be more accurate, it's his only line in the 30-second ad.

While Ekin is featured prominently in the ad, the voice-over was done by a voice actor.

Ekin only speaks at the tail-end of the video, where he says: “Quickly come and sit, quickly come and buy”.

Mandarin? No problem.

Fans got to hear more of Ekin in a behind-the-scenes video, in which he answers questions using his signature Cantonese-accented Mandarin.

He's dedicated to his role, to say the least.

One surprising tidbit that Ekin dropped during the video was that he actually “practised for a week” just to master that one line.

And all that, um, hard work paid off with the director praising Ekin for accurately pronouncing all six words.
