HK Actor Dickson Yu Quits TVB, Says The Company Told Him Not To Clarify Rumours About His Mum Begging For His Life In 2018
In 2018, the actor fell into a coma after collapsing during a football game and there were rumours that his mum had got down on her knees to beg a fengshui master to pray for his life.
We are starting to lose count of the number of stars who have parted ways with TVB recently.
And it appears the list is still growing, with actor Dickson Yu, 32, the latest TVB artiste to announce his resignation from the Hongkong broadcaster.
On May 1 aka Labour Day, Dickson posted a 13-minute-long video on his YouTube channel.
The first half of the vid showed him clearing his TVB locker, while the second half saw Dickson opening up about why he's leaving the company after eight years.
Dickson revealed that he had kept many sentimental items in his locker — like the script from when he hosted the TVB Anniversary Awards to momentos from his dramas and to the jacket he wore when he covered the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio as a host.
"Out with the old and in with the new, so it's goodbye now," an emotional Dickson said to himself, before walking out of the TV station with a box in his hands.
This guy has a flare for drama, doesn't he?
Even though the actor, who is best known for his role as Wing Zai in Freedom Memories, said he didn't achieve much during his time in TVB, he believes that it was still time well-spent.
"These eight years weren't for nothing," he said. "I may not have had a career-defining role, but at least I've tried everything. Most importantly, I gave my all doing it."
"Actually every single decision I made, I really believed in myself!"
While Dickson may sound super thankful to his former employer, there was an incident that left a really bad taste in his mouth.
Back in 2018, Dickson suddenly collapsed and went into a coma during a football game.
At that time, a fengshui master claimed to the media that Dickson's mum had got down on her knees to beg him to pray for her son's life.
However, Dickson said that never happened. According to the actor, TVB wanted him to tell the press that he "has no response" to the rumour. At that time, he could not understand why they came to that decision.
"When we decided [to not clarify the rumour], we didn't think the effect will last for the next four to five years. Or that it would be so ingrained in everyone's minds that whenever I'm mentioned, this is what they would talk about," said Dickson.
As he is a public figure, he's well aware that people would always have stuff to say about him, so he's actually more worried about his mum getting hurt.
"Even until now, maybe there are a lot of people who think that the only reason I'm sitting here is because my mum went down on her knees to beg for my life," he said.
