Dee Hsu Declares That She Is “Not Pro-Taiwan Independence”; Gets Trolled By Both Chinese & Taiwanese Netizens
Damned if you do and damned if you don’t.
The 43-year-old host lost three endorsements in China as a result, while her 15-year-old daughter Elly became collateral damage and was fired as the face of fashion label Jorya.
After almost a week of silence, Dee updated her Weibo with this statement yesterday (Aug 5): “I’m not a pro-Taiwan independence! I hope that everyone takes good care of themselves and their family members during the pandemic. Wishing that all of you stay healthy and safe.”

Her post didn’t appease Chinese netizens one bit, with one netizen commenting that Dee is just “slapping a band aid on a much deeper problem”.
Another netizen asked: “Is it that difficult to say that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China? This has nothing to do with being pro-independence or not. Why was it that you only praised the athletes that defeated Team China? Make your stand clear and ensure that your actions follow through with your stance if you want to earn money in China. If you can’t do that, stay in Taiwan.”
Other netizens also called for her to post the same statement on Instagram to show that her stance is "consistent" regardless of the platform.
Netizens are definitely seeing red
Taiwanese netizens, who had supported Dee up until her latest Weibo post, have also taken offence at her statement. They since gone on her Instagram to leave comments like “You said you don’t support Taiwan’s independence on Weibo but you don’t dare to say the same here. You’re two-faced, and that’s an even more detestable trait.”
They’ve also branded Dee as a “money-faced celebrity”, and have asked her to “get out of Taiwan if [she] likes the Chinese yuan that much”.
