David Tao heaps praises on Eric Chou

Award-winning Mandopop singer David Tao recently revealed in an interview that he rarely sings much offstage. On Monday (Aug 21), David panicked when he had to sing a song with a contestant during the reality television competition One in a Million, a programme hosted by Chang Hsiao-yen.

He said that he was worried about singing something new for the first time and was afraid of any mistakes he might jeopardise the contestant’s chances of winning. He even joked that he wished the microphone was turned off just like how it happened during his performance at a previous Golden Melody Awards ceremony.

Although David is hailed as the ‘God of music’, he mentioned he rarely sings when he’s not working and does not have the habit of singing his own songs or songs written by other people in general. However, the 48-year-old shared that he has his eye on up and coming singer Eric Chou and praised him for his performance on stage.

“While singing is important, the melody and lyrics [of a song] are even more important. Taiwan really needs good composers,” he said.

When asked if he had any plans for the upcoming Chinese Valentine’s day next week (on Aug 28), the 48-year-old said that because the date was close to his wedding anniversary on Aug 31, he is planning to give his wife Penny Jiang a surprise, despite having to work on the actual day.

The singer even joked that he might knit a sweater as “handmade gifts are even more special” since “gifts need not be too elaborate or expensive.”

The couple have been married since 2014 and have stayed together despite all the obstacles they previously faced.
