A Chinese woman had to give up her plans to see Taiwanese singer David Tao’s Beijing concert on September 20 after her grandfather passed away just three days before the show.

The woman, surnamed Luo, had to rush back to her hometown for the funeral, only remembering about her 1,300 yuan (about S$236) ticket before the concert started.

She contacted the ticketing platform’s customer service to request a refund, explaining a family death had derailed her plans.

Sounds reasonable, right? Well, not to the platform.

Instead of a simple “sorry for your loss”, she got a bureaucratic nightmare.

Customer service gave her a hard time, even demanding proof that the deceased “was really her grandfather.”

Yes, really.

So she submitted her grandfather’s death certificate, family relationship documents, all sorts of paperwork involving five family members.

After all that, she was told she could only get back 80 per cent of her money back due to a so-called 20 per cent “handling fee”.

But Luo wasn’t having it. She felt this was clearly an unforeseen situation and should receive a full refund.

But things only got worse. Days later, the platform called again to inform her that she would not be getting a refund at all. Cue disbelief.

Already grieving, she now had to deal with the platform’s red tape on top of her loss.

Frustrated, she went to the media to complain, saying she just wanted a full refund and proper apology.

Well, it worked.

After more back-and-forth, the platform finally backed down, refunded her the entire amount and apologised.

Now was this so difficult?
