Chinese Actress Flaunts Earrings That ‘Cost’ $411K, Turns Out They Are $18 Knock-Offs
In May, Chinese actress Huang Yang Tian Tian posted a series of selfies on Weibo showing off her look for her school's coming-of-age ceremony.
The 18-year-old wore a green gown which she accessorised with rings, a necklace and a pair of diamond and emerald earrings.
Her statement earrings instantly drew attention, with netizens claiming they are from British luxury jewellery brand Graff and that they cost 2.3mil yuan (S$411K).
Although Tian Tian said the earrings were her mother's, many found it odd that they were able to afford such expensive jewellery in the first place.
Her dad, a former civil servant, was dragged into the conversation, with netizens accusing him of using his position for personal gain and embezzlement.
With all the fuss surrounding the incident, the authorities launched an investigation on Tian Tian's father.
He was found innocent, but the results of the investigation, which were made public on July 16, thrusted Tian Tian further into the spotlight.
Turns out, the earrings are cheap knock-offs, and are estimated to cost only around 100 yuan (S$18) per pair.
According to the investigation, Tian Tian's mother received the earrings as a gift from a friend in 2016. China's National Gemstone Testing Center confirmed that they are Graff knock-offs, and were made using materials consisting of glass, copper alloy, and iron alloy.
There are no records of Tian Tian's parents being customers of the luxury jeweller in China.
At least the only crime they are guilty of is being too showy?
