Co-Brand Billboard In China Goes Viral For Its Pun-tastic Hidden Message

Bet you haven’t seen a brand campaign as creative (and cute) as this one in China.

This co-brand advertisement with five popular brands — KFC, Uniqlo, McDonald’s, Luckin Coffee, and Mixue Bingcheng — displayed on huge LED screens at shopping malls has got everyone talking.

Spotted at malls in cities including Guangzhou, Wuhan, and Taiyuan, the collage comprises the five brand logos displayed side by side, with a singular Mandarin word under each logo.

Each word is taken from the brands’ Chinese name, forming a phrase that phonetically reads, “Ken You Mai Rui Mi”.

The clever play on the pinyin is made to sound like “Can you marry me?”

In Mandarin, KFC is Ken De Ji, Uniqlo is You Yi Ku, McDonald's is Mai Dang Lao, Luckin Coffee is Rui Xin Ka Fei, and Mixue Bingcheng is, well, Mi Xue Bing Cheng.

Many were impressed by the kinda cheesy but pun-tastic billboard, with many netizens sharing it online, much to the amusement of those who don’t live in China.

The marketing plan has clearly worked as the viral ad has also sparked a trend of its own. People are now purchasing items from all five brands so they can re-create the same pun with items from their haul.

According to reports, though the successful campaign has received praise from many, there is still no information on who the creative minds behind this project are. Some do think though, that it was conceptualised by a Gen Z.

Or could this just be a (very rich) person's marriage proposal?

Creative, right?
You can literally spot them everywhere
So, can you?
