Chinese palace drama series Story of Yanxi Palace ended on a high note two weeks ago, smashing viewership and streaming records in China. The drama reached a climax in its last episode when Charmiane Sheh’s empress character broke down after she was accused of being in cahoots with Qianlong Emperor’s younger brother who attempted to overthrow him. Charmaine’s eight-minute monologue at the start of the episode was much raved about and many viewers felt for character’s plight despite her being one of the main villains in the show.Although she plays second fiddle to
lead actress Wu Jinyan (Wei Ying Luo or Consort Ling) as the drama chronicles Wei Ying Luo’s rise to the top, Charmaine is unperturbed about being second female lead.

At a beauty event held a few days ago, the Hong Kong actress explained why she decided to take on this role despite having a smaller part in the show. “A good role matters more to me,” she quipped.

In previous reports, it was said that Charmaine had filmed the 70-episode series in 15 days and had significantly lesser scenes due to the limited time she could spend on set as she had concurrent projects during Yanxi’s production period.

Charmaine took the opportunity to clarify on rumours about the length of time she spent on set, saying she filmed this show for two months in summer last year. She added that temperatures soared to as high as 45 degrees and her skin was “very dry” as a result.

The 43-year-old also shared that the cast and crew exchanged skincare tips with each other and often discussed methods to keep their faces moisturised during the production period.“Both the actors and crew were very happy working on this project, plus there are plenty of hot button topics about this show [now] so there will naturally be favourable and unfavourable reports on it. [I’ll] just laugh it off,” said Charmaine, responding to rumours about her receiving a RMB 2 million (approximately S$390,000) paycheck for her role in Yanxi.Yanxi’s producer Yu Zheng has stepped forth to clarify on speculations about the actors’ paychecks and Charmaine’s alleged 15-day shoot on set.“I need to clarify this, the actors’ salaries amounted to RMB 24 million (approximately S$4.8 million) and is nothing compared to our production budget of RMB 300 million (approximately S$60).
