The impromptu ad was not their cup of tea.

On New Year’s Eve, Hunan TV held a star-studded countdown show headlined by a large number of A-listers, including Chinese actor Dylan Wang, as well as Taiwanese stars Alec Su and Cyndi Wang, who won the latest seasons of reality talent shows Call Me By Fire and Sisters Who Make Waves, respectively.

There were also performances by Cyndi’s fellow Sisters Who Make Waves contestants, Cantopop duo Twins’ Charlene Choi and Gillian Chung.

The pair began by singing their song ‘Twins’ from the soundtrack of the movie of the same name, before ending on a high note with an energetic performance of Stefanie Sun’s ‘First Day’.

Though there were times when Charlene and Gillian appeared to be out of breath and had gone off-key, fans were thrilled to see them on stage together.

However, things began to get a little odd after their performance.

When Charlene and Gillian were chatting with host He Jiong, out of the blue, a milk tea mascot came on stage and handed them each a cup of Xiang Piao Piao brand milk tea.

They were then asked to send new year greetings while singing about the beverage to the tune of ‘Oh My Darling, Clementine’.

Charlene and Gillian were clearly caught by surprise, and they stared awkwardly at the teleprompter while clutching the cups and singing the jingle.

From singing to promoting milk tea

Netizens were triggered by how cringey and blatant the ad was, posting comments like "What rubbish!", "Who likes such awkward ads?", and "I'm dumbfounded by this ad".

Yup, us too.
