Cecilia Cheung Breaks Down in Court During S$2.2Mil Lawsuit With Ex-Manager: “I Haven’t Slept in Two Days”
The actress grew emotional under repeated questioning, saying media pressure has been overwhelming.
Cecilia Cheung’s legal battle with her ex-manager is growing more intense by the day.
Last week (Dec 3), the lawsuit hearing between the Hong Kong actress and her former agency, Asia Entertainment Group (AEG) Limited, along with ex-manager Yu Yuk Hing, began in Hong Kong’s High Court
Filed in 2020, the case claims that Cecilia received an advance payment of HK$41.76 million (S$6.94 million) to appear in four films but allegedly failed to meet her contractual obligations, hence breaching her management agreement.
Yuk Hing and AEG are now seeking for HK$12.76mil (S$2.2mil) in compensation for losses and damages.
On Monday morning (Dec 8), the 45-year-old arrived in court at 8.30am wearing a coat, sunglasses and a mask. She greeted the media politely, though reporters noted she looked visibly tense in the courtroom lobby, repeatedly flipping through case documents.
Inside the courtroom, Cecilia took her place in the witness stand. Before proceedings began, she was seen yawning, closing her eyes briefly to rest, and tugging at her ears, seemingly to refocus. Her assistant even handed her a can of Coke to help her stay alert.
But things escalated once the hearing began.
During cross-examination, Cecilia reportedly grew emotional as the plaintiff’s lawyer pressed her on details from the case. While she responded firmly with repeated “I don’t remember”, she also frequently rebutted or drifted off-topic, prompting the judge to intervene.
The judge instructed her to listen carefully and respond solely with “agree” or “disagree,” and reminded her not to question the lawyer in return.
As the questioning grew more persistent, Cecilia eventually lost her composure.
Breaking down in tears, she shouted: “I haven’t slept in two days. This is very unfair to me. The media is putting me under pressure. None of this is true!”
The outburst was so intense that the judge paused to comfort her, explaining that the repeated questions were meant to ensure clarity, given her earlier off-topic responses.
When asked if she could continue, Cecilia took a moment, regained her composure, and replied: “Yes.”
Regarding the core dispute, Cecilia maintained that she did not personally manage the contractual arrangements in question.
She testified that all matters related to her contracts had been handled by her long-time personal assistant and manager, Emily Chow.
