Bryan Wong Says He's Like A 'Redeemed Carpark Coupon' After Winning Best Supporting Actor At Star Awards
He also thanked himself for winning the trophy.
Bryan Wong — newly-minted Best Supporting Actor at the Star Awards 2021 — isn’t attributing his win to wearing lucky charms like, er, red underwear at the glitzy shindig tonight (Apr 18). Or so he tells 8days.sg in a post-win interview.
He explained, “There’s no use in me wearing red underwear, ’cos for professional acting awards, the winners have already been predetermined [by judges]. It’s not like the Top 10 Most Popular Artistes category, where people can call or go online to vote for you.”

A quest to win
Not that he has to leave things to chance; his campy turn as an evil eunuch in the time-travelling period epic A Quest To Heal was so riotously brilliant, even fellow actors (and we at 8days.sg) called his win.
Despite high expectations for him as the hot favourite, Bryan, 50, is taking everything in his stride. “I didn’t feel the pressure,” he shared. “A lot of people said, ‘You’re the hot favourite, you know! What do you think are your odds?’ I told myself, even if I didn’t win the award today, it’s okay. Because I’m the hot favourite! (Laughs) That alone is enough for me.”
We’ve never seen anyone so relieved
Still, when Bryan’s name was announced as the winner, the cameras caught him looking extremely relieved. “I feel very validated. I’m like a carpark coupon that has been redeemed now,” he joked during the media interview. “To take this award home… I’ve not won [a trophy like this] in a long, long time.”
He thanked his colleagues and… himself
When an elated Bryan appeared on screen for our Zoom call, he was clutching his sea-green trophy lovingly. “I’ve never won an award in this colour before,” he marvelled. Bryan looking stunned as he made his way to the stage for his Best Supporting Actor win.
Despite having won 15 other awards over the years, like Best Actor in 2014, it was obvious that Bryan really, really treasured his latest win. So much so that he thanked himself during his acceptance speech for having the courage to change career tracks from hosting to acting in his 40s.
“My mindset is like most millennials’ — you only live once. I started out as a child actor, and if I were to stop my career, I would stop as an actor,” he mused during our interview.
Other than trophy colours, Bryan has also been keeping track of where he had won ’em. “To get this at [Changi Airport’s] T4 is amazing. When I won my All-Time Favourite Artiste award, I was at, I think, Suntec City or MBS? Then when I won Best Host, the awards ceremony was held at Sentosa.” We’re waiting to see where he will receive his next trophy. Congrats, Bryan!
