To Get Back At His Neighbour, Man Blasts Ghost Stories Loudly Through Speakers For 10 Hours Daily
No neighbourly love here.
What happens when a feud between neighbours goes way too far?
In Guangzhou, China, a resident who had frequent disputes with one of his neighbours devised an unusually extreme plan for revenge.
The resident, Lu, together with another neighbour, Li, sought to retaliate against their neighbour, surnamed Xie, by installing speakers on their shared wall and playing a continuous loop of recorded ghost stories every single day.
They turned up the volume on the speakers from 8.45 am to 12 pm, then again from 3.30 pm to 10 pm, subjecting Xie to over 10 hours of continuous creepy audio daily.
However, Xie, the targeted neighbour, was not the only one affected by their scheme. Other residents in the building were also disturbed by the noise.
One neighbour, Cui, who lived two floors above Lu, said her child, who was preparing for university entrance exams, couldn’t focus on studying in peace.
Noise tests showed the decibel levels were within legal limits, so authorities initially could not issue penalties.
Despite multiple complaints and mediation attempts by the residents’ committee, Lu continued the disruptive behaviour, leaving the issue unresolved for an extended period of time.
The neighbours eventually resorted to applying for a pre-litigation injunction, with the court ruling that noise pollution, in their case, should not be measured solely by decibel levels.
Lu was found to have deliberately used frightening sounds to disrupt daily life, seriously affecting community health and peace.
The court ordered Lu and Li to immediately stop playing the recordings, delete them, and remove the loudspeakers. They were also required to promise not to create further noise disturbances.
The bizarre feud reportedly came to an end — but it still leaves one wondering about what unusual scheme Lu might hatch next.
