Live stream shopping has become one of the easiest ways to sell products online. But can an off-the-cuff remark about your customers end up overshadowing the sale?

Taiwanese singer Emma Wu, better known as Gui Gui, recently found herself at the centre of controversy after comments she made during a Xiaohongshu live stream drew criticism.

According to reports, the 36-year-old began the live stream by chatting with fans before promoting her upcoming fan event.

She reportedly encouraged viewers to buy tickets, even saying it was "fine if [they] could not attend" as long as they had purchased one.

Some viewers felt the sales pitch came across as too aggressive, accusing her of making her intention to earn money too obvious.

However, it was another remark that sparked the biggest backlash.

While talking about live stream e-commerce, Gui Gui said she believed she would be good at it because most of her fans are women.

“Girls just have strong purchasing power and are easy to manipulate, so I think I’m quite cut out for this,” she said.

The comment quickly went viral, with some accusing the singer of viewing her fans as little more than customers.

"She's totally treating her fans like ATM machines," one netizen wrote.

Others, however, came to her defence.

"Everyone understands that live streams are mainly for promoting sales. After all, if sales are poor, the organisers will also put pressure on her," one fan argued.
