Anthony Wong Says He’s "Starting A New Life"... So Is He Really Moving To Taiwan?
The actor previously said he was “preparing” to apply for Taiwanese citizenship.
When veteran Hongkong actor Anthony Wong revealed in May that he was “preparing” to be a Taiwanese citizen, it caused quite a stir online. There were netizens who welcomed the 58-year-old, who was then in Taiwan to shoot a drama, with open arms, while others criticised him for turning his back on his own country and bringing "shame to the Wong family name".
So naturally when Anthony tweeted that he had “left the place I lived in for 20 years and am starting a new life” last Saturday (Aug 29), many assumed he had completed his immigration process, which led them to leave comments wishing him all the best in Taiwan.
Don't worry, he's only moving homes in Hongkong
When contacted by Apple Daily, Anthony clarified that he was only “moving homes for the time being”. He had already planned to shift homes in March and had mentioned that in previous interviews, where he also said that he intends to relocate to Canada where he will reunite with his sons and implied that he will not live in Hongkong after he retires. FYI: Anthony has two sons, Yat Yat and Yee Yee, who are both in their 20s, with his wife. In 2018, he was exposed for having a now-21-year-old illegitimate son named William with a former lover.
He's not ready to retire just yet
In his interview with Apple Daily, Anthony elaborated on the topic of migration, saying: “I said I was going to Canada because my two sons are there. I didn’t say I was going to retire. I still have debts to pay and will still have to continue working.”
He added that he has no intentions of retiring at 60 as there are still many things in his career that he wants to do like “create content, write a book, start an online channel, do a play, open a school and do a production”.
“Retirement means no one wants you, no one is waiting for you. Retirement means doing tai chi, playing chess at the park, talking to old friends, and asking your son for money to go travelling. I am not used to such a life,” he said.
Sharing his thoughts on the current situation in Hongkong, he said: “Forget about Hongkong. It is so messy, the economy is bad, and the prospects do not look optimistic.” In comparison, he praised Taiwan for being a place that offers a lot of room for growth.
