Besides being two of Hong Kong’s biggest stars who were once part of TVB’s Five Tigers, there are a number of similarities between Tony Leung, 61, and Andy Lau, 62.

The actors are fiercely private about their personal lives and had long-term relationships with their respective partners before tying the knot in 2008.

Recently, the pals guested on Hong Kong host Carol Cheng aka Do Do Jie’s The Do Show to promote their new movie The Goldfinger. There they also shared about life with their significant others.

Tony and wife Carina Lau have been together for 35 years

When asked how they maintain their relationships, Tony, who has been with Carina Lau, 58, since 1989, shared that it’s about mutual respect and accommodating one another.

“She gives in to me a lot that’s why we’ve managed to get along for so long. I'm quite withdrawn and would rarely spend time with her. Occasionally, I would accompany her and dine with friends, but I fear being in [social] situations with a lot of people,” said Tony.

“She likes liveliness, while I prefer things quiet.”

Andy and Carol began dating in 1986

As for Andy and wife Carol Chu, 57, a former Malaysian beauty queen, there is no secret to making their relationship work. It just does.

“I don't know what she thinks is good about me, and [vice versa]. When we are together, she doesn't give in to me, and I don't give in her,” said Andy with a laugh.

In fact, they are so comfortable with each other that in the past, when they were based in different countries, they went half a year without speaking on the phone.

Do Do Jie joked that this is worse than a long-distance relationship, to which Andy replied: “She didn’t make such demands.”

Andy can't explain why he likes his wife

He did, however, give up eating meat 10 years ago as his wife and daughter, 11-year-old Hanna, are vegetarians.

“After my daughter was born, I was still eating meat, but I stopped as both my wife and daughter are vegetarians. It’s strange to be eating meat alone,” he explained, stressing that it is a personal preference and has nothing to with religion.

Before becoming a full-fledged vegetarian, Andy experimented with a vegetarian diet for one week during a break between concerts.

“It didn't really affect my condition, so I made the switch,” he said.

His wife was very concerned that his body would not be able to adapt to the diet and frequently checked on him. “But after the concert, she felt my performance was pretty good,” he nodded approvingly.

Does their good nature have anything to do with their clean diets?

Besides being consummate actors, Tony and Andy are also known for being nice and mild mannered.

Having known them for decades, Do Do Jie said she has never seen either of them flare up. Do they not lose their temper?

“I would [keep it inside and] be angry at myself. I don’t recall losing my temper. At most I would do this,” Tony said clenching his fist in frustration.

Stay away from Tony when you see him like this

There was an exception a long time ago.

According to Tony, he was alone at home and was so angry that he smashed everything in the house.

“I can’t remember why. After I smashed the first item, I couldn’t stop. It was like I was acting,” he said.

Andy too recalled an incident when he lost his cool.

It was after a performance and the company was pointing out everyone’s mistakes. In a fit of anger, Andy pulled apart a metal clothes rack and threw everything on the floor.

“Actually, cleaning up the mess after an outburst is the most troublesome part,” he joked.
