Maple Yip, the wife of Hong Kong singer and swimmer Alex Fong, 45, will be releasing a autobiography recounting how she was brainwashed by a cult as a teenager.

Maple, 31, first drew international attention in Netflix’s 2023 docuseries In the Name of God: A Holy Betrayal, where she and other victims exposed the sexual crimes of Korean cult Jesus Morning Star founder Jeong Myeong Seok.

The revelations caused a widespread outrage and led to Myeong Seok receiving a 17-year prison sentence.

Her new book, written in Korean and titled Traces, details how she was targeted by a cult when she was around 16 years old, gradually brainwashed, and how she eventually broke free and pressed charges.

“You may think cults and sexual harm are far removed from you, but I think it is because you don’t fully understand what I went through,” Maple wrote on Threads.

In addition to confronting her own trauma and finding healing, she hopes her book will serve as a warning to those trapped in cults or other manipulative groups.

“I want to document that painful period, sort out my thoughts, and seek healing,” she explained.

“For you, I hope that by reading my experience, you may realise, ‘If I keep going down this path, I might end up in danger,’ and take it as a warning to avoid harm.”

She added that suffering must be transformed into something meaningful, so that it doesn’t end as mere pain, but instead becomes a source of strength for victims and society at large.

In a follow-up Netflix documentary The Echoes of Survivors: Inside Korea’s Tragedies, Maple revealed that sharing her story exposed her to intense online attacks and even drove her to suicidal thoughts.

Even so, she pressed ahead with her autobiography, undeterred by malicious criticism, in the hope of creating positive impact for others.

Alex went public with his relationship with Maple in 2023. He announced their marriage on Valentine’s Day this year and are now expecting their first child.

Maple's book, titled Traces, details how she was brainwashed by the cult.
