Are AI Robot Dogs Replacing Humans In Performing Lion Dances?

Will human lion dancers still have a job in the near future?

Are AI Robot Dogs Replacing Humans In Performing Lion Dances?

It is that time of the year where most of us will have to embrace the loud sounds of the Chinese New Year celebrations.

However, it seems some are taking a different approach when booking a lion dance troupe for gatherings and events.

In a video posted online, Instagram user mw10.01 saw robot dogs being used instead of humans.

Dubbed a “cyber lion dance”, the AI-powered performance was held at the Dutch Flower Town in Shenzhen, China as part of a grassroots initiative to connect with foreigners living in the city.

This isn’t the first time these “lion dancers” have been used.

Another video online showed the National Museum of China feature these robotic dancers as part of their new Spring Festival Exhibition launch.

Last July, Chinese girl group, Emei Kung Fu Girls performed alongside these AI lion dancers at the 2024 China AI Gala.

While we think they look rather cute, netizens were divided on these performers.

“Even lion dancers are out of job because of AI,” read a comment while another cautions that these “robots will turn on us one day.”

We think some of these netizens might have watched too many Terminator movies.

Will you consider having an AI robot the next time you book a lion dance troupe?
