Could AI Actors Replace Real Actors In Chinese Dramas Soon? Chinese Industry Insiders Think So

First, there were AI influencers. Coming soon: AI actors?

There's been a widespread discussion within the Chinese entertainment industry about the possibility of  AI actors replacing real actors in supporting roles in dramas soon.

The topic was first brought up at an industry conference in China last week, but has been further fuelled by subsequent online discussions and even a report that "roles below the second male lead could be completely replaced by AI actors". 

This includes supporting actors, stunt doubles, and all background talent.

This claim was backed by two screenshots that have been circulating online. One states that approvals for new projects in China this year are limited, and production companies have been encouraged to use AI for filming and post-production. 

The rumour also comes with another uncomfortable possibility that actor salaries will drop across the board. With AI speeding up production timelines and reducing reliance on human performers, fewer people are needed, lowering costs.

The rumour struck a nerve, especially among mid-tier and supporting actors, who are already facing fewer opportunities amid a slowdown in drama productions.

Renowned producer Yu Zheng, who is behind huge dramas such as The Romance of the Condor Heroes, and The Legend of Hao Lan revealed that he is also developing AI-driven dramas but remains cautious about the idea of fully replacing human actors.

“Actors with real skill, talented writers, capable directors, you don’t need to worry. Humans will prevail. We should adapt to the times, but also have confidence in ourselves,” he said.

On the other hand, production company Yaoke Media launched two AI actors, Lin Xiyan and Qin Lingyue that come with social media accounts, self-introduction videos, and drama promotions on Wednesday (Mar 18).

However, netizens remain skeptical, even opposed to the idea of AI fully replacing actors, with many calling it terrifying.

“If it’s all AI, I’d rather just watch anime,” said a netizen.

Another quipped: “Let AI make it. We just won’t watch it”.

Some have also called out the two AI actors features as having a combination of actors.

"Isn't it illegal to use the likeness of these well-known human actors?" asked a netizen.
