The 2018 Oscar Nominations Are Out!

'The Shape of Water' has 13 nominations…. and James Franco has none!

The 2018 Oscar Nominations Are Out!

Sally Hawkins and Doug Jones in 'The Shape of Water'.

Horror and fantasy ruled this year’s Academy Awards with Guillermo del Toro’s 1950-set creature feature The Shape of Water landing 13 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director and three acting categories. Christopher Nolan’s WWII epic Dunkirk has eight noms, while Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, already crowned Best Motion Picture (Drama) at the Golden Globes, is up for seven trophies. Elsewhere, another horror flick, a genre traditionally ignore by the Academy voters, Jordan Peele’s Get Out, scored four noms, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor for Daniel Kaluuya.

If you ask us, the Best Picture race will be a close one between The Shape of Water and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. The former has already won the Producers Guild Award for Best Feature on Sunday, and the latter took home Best Ensemble at the Screen Actors Guild Awards a few days ago. For 19 of its 28 years, the PGA winner went on to win the Best Picture Oscar (Argo, Slumdog Millionaire); the winner of the SAG cast has matched the Oscar Best Picture 11 times in 22 years (Spotlight and Birdman). So bear that in mind when you’re betting in the office pool.

Elsewhere, Greta Gerwig became the fifth woman to be vying for Best Director for the coming-of-age dramedy Lady Bird. Past nominees include Lina Wertmuller (1975’s Seven Beauties), Jane Campion (1993’s The Piano), Sofia Coppola (2003’s Lost in Translation) and Kathryn Bigelow (2008’s The Hurt Locker). Bigelow is the only one to win the Oscar. Meanwhile, James Franco, once considered a Best Actor candidate for The Disaster Artist, was snubbed, probably because of the sexual harassment and inappropriate behaviour allegations he’s currently facing. Do you think he'll still be invited to the show?

Catch The 90th Academy Awards live on March 5 on HBO (StarHub Ch 601) or HBO Go, starting with the red carpet coverage at 7.30am, followed by the ceremony at 9am. With Jimmy Kimmel, back as the host for the second time. Here are the nominations in the major categories. (Photo: 20th Century Fox)
