When it comes to celebrating special occasions, there’s no better way than to do it surrounded by loved ones and a hearty spread of good food. After all, a full heart and a full belly go together as nicely as fresh ingredients and a pot of hot fragrant soup.

We’re now almost in the month of May, which means that Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are approaching very soon (May 14 and June 18 respectively, FYI). If you’re already stressing out over where to take mum and pop, we’ve got an option that’s gonna help you kill those metaphorical two birds with one stone without being too harsh on your wallet.

From May 1 till June 25, Wu Wang Guo Hotpot at Chinatown Point is offering a special Parents’ Day set with four items, including Nourishing Sake Drunken Black Chicken, at just $42.

Parents' Day set, $42

Wu Wang Guo Hotpot, which translates into “Unforgettable Hotpot” in Chinese, is a relatively new kid on the local hotpot block, having launched in a quiet corner of Chinatown Point in 2021.

When 8days.sg headed down one Thursday night, we were taken through the outer part of the restaurant — which was splashed in bold orange hues and looked more modern and minimalist — into a more opulent environment with lush plant decor and elegant furnishings, making us feel as though we’d stepped into a secret garden.

Staff told us that while tables are assigned randomly during booking, you can call the restaurant to request to be seated in this arguably more IG-worthy section (perfect for all those family photos), which just opened in December last year.

We were recommended the WWG Collagen Beauty Soup (from $11.80) and Nourishing Drunken Chicken Soup (from $8.80), which also happen to be two of their most popular broths, to pair with the Parents’ Day Set. We also got the Spicy Nourish Mala Soup (from $9.80) and Pumpkin Fishmaw with Pig Stomach Soup (from $7.50).

The Nourishing Sake Drunken Black Chicken (half portion) was incredibly tender and flavourful, with hints of alcohol from being marinated in sake for one hour. We personally found that it went best with the Nourishing Drunken Chicken Soup, which probably shouldn’t come as a surprise given their similar bases (try this: pour a little bit of the sake sauce into the soup for an extra kick).

Also included in the set are four pieces of Crab Tofu, which have been carefully crafted into the shape of roses specially for the Parents’ Day set, four longevity buns, and four shots of Yomeishu.

The bouncy Crab Tofu boasts shreds of crabmeat, lending it an interesting texture. The longevity buns, filled with the usual lotus paste, made great snacks to nibble on while we were waiting for the raw stuff to be cooked.

The Parents’ Day set is available for just $42, and you can get it at just $32 if there are three generations of family members dining together at the same table. So yup, if there was ever a time to jio your parents and grandparents out for a nice meal, this would definitely be it.

Don’t worry, you all won’t need to whip out your ICs or show DNA test results to prove your relationship to the staff — just make sure that it actually looks like there are three distinct generations at the table.

On the other hand, the Parents’ Day set can be ordered by anybody, not just children with their parents, so friends, colleagues, and couples can enjoy the promotion too.

Enjoy more deals on weekdays

Besides the Parents’ Day promo, Wu Wang Guo Hotpot also has three different deals from Mondays to Wednesdays.

Mondays are for bingeing on oysters, as you can get five of them for $12.50 or 10 for $20. Meat lovers would want to make a reservation for Tuesdays so they can get gorgeously marbled wagyu beef for $10 per half-portion, while Wednesday is Ladies’ Night, where gals get one-for-one on all drinks, including alcoholic beverages.

There are a wealth of other dishes to discover within the pages of Wu Wang Guo Hotpot’s extensive menu, but to help you out with the decision-making process, we also sampled a few other must-try restaurant specialties.

If you’re craving more sake goodness, try the Sake Drunken Prawns ($14 for a half portion, $28 for a full portion), which were served live in a bowl of sake and then cooked fresh.

For those of you who just went “Huh? Lazy to peel leh…”, we’ve got fabulous news: The staff at Wu Wang Guo will be more than happy to deshell all the prawns for you. They’ll even plate it nicely in front of you along with the prawn head, which by the way, should be sucked to savour the full flavour of the sake.

The shelling is skilfully executed with a fork and knife so there’s no need to worry about hygiene, and the same can be done for other shellfish like lobsters. Although some of you guys might want to sit this service out so you can do it yourself to impress your date.

We recommend the Dragonfruit Prawn Paste ($13), which boasted the natural sweetness of dragonfruit and chewy bits that gave it texture and bite. We also enjoyed the Scallop Prawn Balls ($6.90 for a half portion, $13.80 for a full portion), which were covered in a generous layer of shredded scallop meat.

The Seaweed Beancurd Skin ($5.80 for a half portion, $11.60 for a full portion) was an interesting combination and served as a nice palate refresher between all the meat and seafood dishes.

Like most other hotpot restaurants, there is an extensive selection of sauces — 28, to be exact — for you to add to your meal, including chilli oil, sesame oil, oyster sauce, spring onions, red fermented beancurd, and much more. There are also four side dishes and three types of fruit, which change every day. These are all available free-flow for an additional $4.

Free dessert to end the meal

Dessert, we were pleased to learn, was free, and consisted of ice cream and slushies. The flavour of the day we were there was yuzu, which was refreshing and provided the perfect ending to a filling and satisfying meal.

Last but not least, night owls can chalk this place down as one of their newest supper haunts as Wu Wang Guo Hotpot is open until 3am daily. There’s even a 25 percent late-night discount on all hotpot ingredients from 9.30pm onwards.

Wu Wang Guo Hotpot is at #03-09 Chinatown Point, 133 New Bridge Rd, S059413. Tel: 6227 0309. Open daily, 11.30am-3am. For reservations, visit http://bit.ly/3lDhRAO. More info via website, Facebook, Instagram.
