White Rabbit Candy-Flavoured Lay’s Potato Chips Taste Test: Nice Or Not?
The results are surprising.
White Rabbit milk candy-themed snacks aren't new — we've seen them in stuff like bubble tea and ice cream. While those sounded like reasonable collaborations, the latest creation had us scratching our heads: White Rabbit Candy-Flavoured Lay’s Potato Chips. Say what? The crisps were first released in China earlier in June and can now be found in Singapore at selected NTUC FairPrice outlets for $2.50 a packet (65g; serves one to two pax). We snagged ours at the Ang Mo Kio Hub branch and tore open a packet with some trepidation.
The look
The packaging is plain at first glance, yet rather cool in an abstract way. There’s a close-up illustration of what appears to be a buck-toothed kid’s mouth, a nod to the sweet’s bunny mascot. Fun thing to do: line the top half of your face against the packet to take gag photos. Cute.
The taste
The familiar smell of the creamy candy immediately wafts from the packet the moment we open it. So far so good… we think. The candy’s distinctive flavour is apparent on the first coupla munches, but isn’t cloying. As we munch on, the Rabbit’s mild, milky sweetness dissipates and is replaced by the usual salty savouriness of Lay’s thin, crispy potato chips. Intriguing. We’re not sure why, but we keep reaching for another chip.
Verdict
Pretty nice! Think of this as a budget version of the white chocolate-coated potato chips from Japanese brand Royce’. It’s also somewhat like the strange but pleasant flavour marriage between a McDonald’s French fry dipped into vanilla soft-serve ice cream. The sweet, creamy and salty notes somehow work. Yes, we’re rather baffled too.
