Tiger Sugar Opening Taiwanese Dessert Soup Shop & It Doesn't Sell Bubble Tea
There are seats for dining in.
Taiwanese bubble tea chain Tiger Sugar is well-known for its brown sugar pearl milk, and come December 6, it’s opening another outlet at Capitol Piazza, where it had set up its first flagship shop last year. But this time, the brand is offering something different: Taiwanese-style dessert soups.
Called Tiger Sugar Dessert, the dine-in outlet will have 10 seats where you can slowly savour your sweet treat. It currently has four branches in its native Taiwan, but Singapore is Tiger Sugar Dessert’s first Southeast Asia outpost.
No bubble tea sold here
But don’t expect bubble tea here (get your brown sugar pearl milk fix at the Tiger Sugar BBT shop just a few steps away). In fact, brown sugar is not even the star ingredient in the desserts offered. “Brown sugar doesn’t go well with everything. We’re not just a brown sugar dessert store,” Tiger Sugar’s local franchise managing director Trevor Fong tells 8days.sg.
Instead of BBT, the dessert shop serves “traditional Taiwanese desserts with a modern twist” and BBT-esque toppings, such as Roasted Mung Bean soup with Golden QQ ($6) and an orh nee-like Taiwan Taro Lava with Taro Pearl and Cream Mousse (pictured, $6.60). The thick taro paste comes in a cup, and is meant to be slurped up with a straw.
Red Bean Soup with Taiwan Black Sesame Rice Balls, $7.80
The store’s desserts are also prepared using a “traditional cooking style”, like this old-school double-boiled red bean soup with sesame tang yuan. It seems kinda like Taiwanese dessert chain Blackball to us, though Tiger Sugar’s desserts in a cup look fancier (see below).
Fresh Mango with Golden Crystal & Creamy Sago Milk, $7.80
This mod take on the popular Asian mango sago dessert has layers of fresh mangoes, mango purée, sago in fresh milk and ‘crystal’ jelly bits.
Purple Rice with Red Bean Soup & Sago, $6
Prefer something simple and homely? There’s also a hot bowl of red bean soup with earthy purple rice and sago offered.
