Tekka Seafood Stall Goes Digital During Pandemic, With Help From 19-Year-Old

Nineteen-year-old Kino Lee (right in pic) is in his final year of culinary studies at Shatec. He is also the son of the affable Alex Lee (left in pic), 55, towkay of Lee Yit Huat Trading, a seafood stall in Tekka Market which has been operating for almost 30 years. Before the pandemic hit, the bouncy, earnest Kino admits he rarely dropped by the shop except to help out occasionally as a cashier. Now, he's here every day, consolidating orders, packing, and updating the stall’s brand new website which he helped to develop. "I was so happy when I got my first online order," says Kino of the website’s early days, which picked up as the weeks went on. At its peak, he did about 25 orders in a day — no mean feat, considering he was the only one doing all the packing and organising deliveries. Since the start of Phase 2, the online business has dipped slightly as the market fills up with customers again, but Kino says he wants to keep the digital presence going. "Actually, I was planning to do this even before Covid-19, because I wanted to help update my dad's business. His customers come from all over the island, not just around Tekka, so with the website, they don't need to come all the way down and fight with the crowd".
