Married couple Janelle Zou (who goes by Jan), 32, and Kelvin Seow, 31, opened dairy-free ice cream shop Oat & About for a rather ‘selfish’ reason: they’re both lactose intolerant. After all, it isn’t easy to replicate ice cream’s rich lushness without using fresh milk or cream. At this "inclusive" new plant-based ice cream parlour in Chinatown, there’s an extensive range of flavours for everyone – from classic chocolate to more gourmet ones like chrysanthemum and carrot cake. And they’re all made with oat milk

The cosy 10-seater along Erskine Road started out as an online business in May, before the duo decided to open a physical store in October.

Attracted customers with guerilla marketing stunt

If you were in Chinatown a couple of months ago, you might’ve caught the duo out on the streets promoting their ice cream shop.

In a cute video they posted on Instagram, titled “POV: You have zero marketing budget for your oat milk ice cream shop launch…”. A cheerful Jan is seen strolling around Chinatown holding a cardboard sign she DIY-ed, reading “100% Dairy-Free Plant-Based Oat Milk Ice Cream” in bold bubble font.

Kelvin laughs and tells us the idea was his, and that surprisingly, it worked. “Some people were genuinely curious, so they stopped and asked what it was about, and we introduced them to the brand. We filmed that before we opened, so we told them we weren’t open yet, but asked them to come back later!”, he shares.

Jan chimes in: “We got mostly positive and curious reactions. There was also an uncle who came up just to see what was going on!”.

When Oat & About eventually opened a while later, Kelvin says a few of the intrigued passers-by actually did pay their shop a visit.

Following this success, the couple say: “we are planning more marketing plans on social media, but different ones 'cos we can’t repeat the same stunt again lah".
