Takagi Ramen Offers Free Voucher For Tan Chuan-Jin & Cheng Li Hui To Meet & ‘End Things’
The voucher stipulated two free bowls of ramen, to be redeemed by the former politicians at the chain’s Marine Parade Central outlet.
At a press conference yesterday, PM Lee said he had “counselled” Tan and Cheng after he was alerted to their actions. “Meanwhile his relationship with Ms Cheng had to stop,” said PM Lee, who later came across information “very recently” that “strongly suggested” that the relationship between Tan and Cheng had resumed.
Takagi Ramen offers voucher
After news broke on Tan and Cheng's resignation, ramen chain Takagi Ramen posted on social media an e-voucher that purportedly offered “2 x free ramen of your choice” to Tan Chuan-Jin and Cheng Li Hui to “meet [and] end things once and for all”.
Accompanying the voucher was the caption:
“We understand that your boss @leehsienloong already advised you guys twice to break up but you guys didn't.
Let us help you, here is an e-voucher to the both of you to enjoy a bowl of hearty ramen and talk things out.
We hope Takagi Ramen can be the place where the two of you meet to end things once and for all and start spending time with your loved ones who felt hurt by this… [heart-shaped gesture emoji].
Let's make Marine Parade and Tampines great again! [heart emoji]”
The voucher was apparently valid till “23 November 2025” (the deadline for holding the next General Election), and redeemable at the chain’s Blk 86 Marine Parade Central outlet. Prior to being Speaker of Parliament, Tan was an MP for Marine Parade GRC.
Takagi Ramen previously signed Soh Rui Yong as an ambassador
In 2021, Takagi Ramen signed a $20,000 ambassadorship deal with national marathoner Soh Rui Yong, who incidentally lashed out in 2019 at Tan Chuan-Jin and the Singapore National Olympic Council, of which Tan was the president.
The SNOC had omitted Soh from the Singapore contingent for the South-east Asian (SEA) Games that year, after a spat involving Soh and his teammate Ashley Liew in which Soh alleged that an SNOC-nominated Liew did not deserve to win a prestigious sportsmanship prize.“I'm disappointed that SNOC president Tan Chuan-Jin and his team have chosen to behave in such a petty manner. This is akin to primary school playground politics where kids go, 'I don't friend you already!' just because you say something they don't like,” Soh wrote on Facebook.
Takagi Ramen was founded by Singaporean Yang Kaiheng and his Japanese-Australian wife Ai Takagi. The couple, who ran socio-political website The Real Singapore, was sentenced to jail in 2016 for sedition.
The ramen chain, which has the tagline “Ramen for the Average Singaporean”, currently has 11 outlets islandwide.
