Surprisingly Sedap Halal Frozen Bergedil & Curry Puff Found At Supermarket
Perfect for an easy Hari Raya snack at home.
Karipap (Malay-style curry puff) is an underrated snack that deserves more love. The little crusty parcels, stuffed with spicy diced potatoes or sardines, are heavenly when eaten fresh out of the fryer. Circuit breaker has made it a bit trickier for us to go out and tapow some curry puffs when the craving strikes. But luckily, we have discovered an alternative at the supermarket — frozen karipap that we can store in our freezer and fry up anytime.
Curry puffs all day
Made by Malaysian company Perniagaan Makanan Maz, which specialises in halal frozen food products, the machine-made karipap is sold at Giant supermarket as a bag of 15 frozen puffs ($4.80). There are two flavours available, Potato and Sardine.
There’s bergedil too
Other than curry puffs, we also found the company’s frozen Bergedil (deep-fried mashed potato patties loaded with celery, spring onions, shallots and sometimes minced meat, $4.80 for a bag of 12 pieces) at Giant. The supermarket’s online store is carrying Curry Samosas ($4.80 for 15 pieces) too. But you will have to make the trek to Giant’s brick-and-mortar stores for the curry puffs and bergedils, as they are not listed on its website.
Taste test
We bought the karipap and bergedil to try, and deep-fried ’em in hot oil for a few minutes. They’re surprisingly sedap — the petite, machine-made curry puff is generously stuffed with lots of mildly spicy curried potato cubes (the crust is on the stodgier side, but passable for a frozen puff). The bergedil is also delish. It crackles gently to the bite, and yields soft, mashed potatoes dotted with bits of celery. But we examine the ingredients list for both items, and find MSG listed. Ah, maybe that’s part of the reason why they taste so good.
