Sunshine’s New D24 Durian Cream Bun Taste Test: Nice Or Not?

We’re not sure what to make of the durian mascot dressed as a king — cute or creepy? You decide. As with other Sunshine buns, expect a roll split in the centre and piped with cream filling. The smell of the king of fruit assaulted out nostrils soon as we tore open the packet.

Interestingly, aside from the usual processed stuff like milk powder, margarine and icing sugar, ingredients for the cream filling include “durian flesh” and “may contain traces of durian seed skin and fragments”. For a $1.30 bun (it’s about 20 to 30 cents pricier than Sunshine's regular bun flavours)? Really? Well, read on.

First, the bread — the crust is a bit stiff and dry, but the crumb within is reasonably soft. Luckily the decent amount of cream in it moistens the bun. The filling is like a softer, more modest version of buttercream with a surprisingly strong hit of durian flavour that tasted quite pleasant. It had little to none of the artificial essence we were expecting — we even spotted a few durian fibres in it.

Quite nice! Surprisingly rather moreish with a decent durian flavour and good cream-to-bun ratio for a $1.30 snack. Pair with a cup of coffee.
