POV: We Sent Our Gen Z Intern To A CNY Fair & Found Out What Festive Treats Zoomers Still Like

When Chinese New Year comes around every year, there’s always a list of must-dos for the festive season. Like spring-cleaning (urgh) and — the fun part — hitting up CNY fairs to stock up on tasty tidbits and treats for the fam and house guests.
Some traditions evolve with the times, like how ang pows can be given via Paylah transfers these days. For CNY goodies, the trends come and go every year. Remember those few years when everything had mala flavouring in it? Or the legendary annual three-hour queue for Kim Peng Hiang’s bak kwa, where people brought their own chairs to wait in line.
We have noticed some goodies that are more popular with our parents’ generation, like mystery plastic-wrapped candies and preserved plums that end up languishing in fancy boxes, and hard-to-crack melon seeds.
