While Pizza Hut’s Chicken Satay Pizza Is Fun To Eat, The Ayam Bakar Is Better

Chicken Satay Pizza, from $24.90 for nine inches

Strange as it sounds, this is sorta like getting a plate of satay at your favourite hawker centre, then draping the contents onto a pizza. This pie comes with “marinated chicken chunks, fragrant ketupat rice, cucumbers and juicy sliced onions, all on a bed of savoury house special peanut sauce”. And mozzarella cheese, of course.

The taste

The first thing that hits us when we pop open the box is a whiff of what seems like lemongrass and turmeric. We like the tender chicken chunks, and the mild, more-savoury-than-sweet peanut sauce works surprisingly well with the equally mild and stretchy cheese, livened up with semi-soft onions, crunchy cucumber and chewy ketupat. Not bad, especially if you enjoy carbs-on-carbs, seen in this unorthodox combo of ketupat and pizza dough.  

Half Spring Ayam Bakar with Ketupat, $19.90

We found this baked Indonesian-influenced spring chicken quite yummy. It’s well-marinated with spices like turmeric and cumin, and juicy throughout. Pity it’s a little petite for the price – we reckon this portion can feed two small eaters at most.

Sweet Chilli Wings, $9.50 for six pcs

Our top pick from Pizza Hut’s seasonal menu. Succulent and tender mid-joint wings covered in a fiery “sweet chilli” glaze.

Gula Melaka Doughnuts, $5.90 for two pcs

Sugar-glazed doughnuts pumped with a gooey gula melaka filling. Nicely fluffy and not too sweet, though we wish there was more gula melaka filling in this. Still, a pleasant dessert to end your meal.

Takeaway and delivery deals available

Some of these seasonal dishes are available as a sharing bundle for five to six pax: the Satay Feast Box ($44.90) comes with one regular Chicken Satay Pizza, a regular pizza of your choice and two sides.

Alternatively, the Chicken Satay Pizza is available one-for-one via delivery; you can also get it at 50 percent off via takeaway (deal not available on the eve of or during public holidays).
