Since the K-wave and Psy’s ‘Gangnam Style’ hit took off, the term “oppa” is now in everyone’s lexicon. The Korean term of endearment — which is used in Korea to address an older male relative or friend — was also adopted by K-fans to refer to their bias (a favourite idol group member) or hunky actors like Gong Yoo and Song Joong Ki.
So when Old Chang Kee sent 8days.sg an e-mail announcing the launch of its Oppa Fried Chicken, we were expecting a Park Seo Joon-lookalike to endorse the product (or perhaps Subway ambassador Cha Eun-Woo?)

OppaOld Chang Kee-style
But the oppa in the promotional images was not a famous face. “Who is this guy?” our colleague asked us.
Mystified, we checked with Old Chang Kee’s marketing rep, who gave us a surprisingly wholesome answer: Fried chicken ‘oppa’ is actually Old Chang Kee’s own assistant retail manager.
“He’s a Korean who has been working in Singapore for many years, which is why we have decided to use our own staff as our model for the new launch,” the rep adds.

You will soon see this oppa everywhere
‘Oppa’, aka Yim Ho Bin, 45, has been working at Old Chang Kee for almost five years. As for how he feels about being the ad-hoc model oppa, the response was: “Feeling excited to see himself at all Old Chang Kee outlets and Coffee Houses.” Cute.

Limited-edition fried chicken
Now, for folks who are more interested in fried chicken than oppas, the snack chain’s latest drop is limited-edition and available only from Nov 1 to 30.
The Korean-style fried chicken wings are separated into drumette and wingette pieces, and are coated in a house-made sweet soy sauce and white sesame seeds.
The ‘KFC’ is priced at $10 for a 10-wing box, $5 for four wings and $3 for two wings.

Available as a rice bowl set
You can also get the sweet soy sauce wings as a rice bowl set at Old Chang Kee’s Coffee House outlets. Each bowl ($13.90) comes with a free barley drink and three wings on white rice with edamame, corn, cherry tomatoes, broccoli and half a hard-boiled egg.
Available from Nov 1-30 for dine-in, takeaway or delivery. For outlet information, go to www.oldchangkee.com.
