New Restaurant: Kuro Maguro

Bluefin tuna and other seafood rice bowls are offered at this casual Japanese joint. (A version of this story first appeared in Issue 1371, Jan 23, 2017.)

New Restaurant: Kuro Maguro

Also at Tanjong Pagar Centre is this casual Japanese donburi (rice bowl) spot by Misaki Megumi Suisan, a wholesaler of maguro in Kanagawa Prefecture. ‘Kuro Maguro’ translates to bluefin tuna, the Bentley of all tunas. The restaurant ensures the freshness of the fish using a technique called ‘super frozen’, flash-freezing it at - 60°C as soon as it’s caught to ensure maximum freshness. It’s air-flown to Singapore weekly. There are 18 types of donburi, with 16 types of tuna donburi all prepared using bluefin tuna. And they’re all quite affordable since the parent company is a wholesaler. Try the Otoro Meshi (pictured, $32.80), with fatty tuna belly chunks, or the Salmon Oyako Meshi ($20.80) with salmon chunks and juicy roe. Mini portions of selected donburi are offered for about half the price, if you have the appetite of a sparrow. The same company also owns Maguro-Donya restaurant at Eat at Seven in Suntec City.
