This Mexican joint in the east has put a lemak local spin on the crispy churro, usually enjoyed as a snack or for breakfast with stuff like melted chocolate in Spain and Latin American countries such as Mexico. Love otah? Adore pasta? So do we. However, we’re not sure about combining the two together, though this number sounds like it could work. It features pasta (with your choice of options like wholemeal spaghetti or penne) tossed in a cream sauce that’s been cooked with spicy chunks of otah. It’s garnished with hae bee hiam for extra punch.

The Spanish frozen yogurt chain’s homage to the classic Peranakan dessert is a layered creation of coconut yoghurt, chewy tapioca flour jellies, gula melaka syrup and coconut shavings. Pity we found the combo of tangy yogurt and creamy coconut milk a tad jarring. Feeling extra patriotic? There’s also the Majulah Singapura ($5.90; right in pic), a mix of natural and strawberry froyo with fresh berries, white chocolate and shredded coconut, all in the colours of the Singapore flag.

Feeling peckish for Italian-style chicken rice? National Day sees the return of this family diner’s seasonal Singapore Chicken Rice Risotto ($26.95). Think a creamy white wine and butter-based risotto featuring nutty Italian carnaroli rice infused with chicken stock and topped with slices of oven-roasted free-range chicken and crunchy broccolini. Accompanied with house-made chilli sauce spiked with sweet wine vinegar.

Call this new Salted Egg Oozy Bo Luo Croissant the love child of a, er, multinational threesome. French croissant meets HK bo luo (pineapple) bun, meets Singapore’s obsession for anything with salted egg. The pastry is topped with a special bo luo crumble made with flour, sugar, butter and egg and filled with buttery, salted egg filling. We tried it and found it reminiscent of HK cha chaan tengs’ classic bo luo buns, with it’s not too sweet filling and crusty shell. The croissant is available in other flavours, like Kaya Butter, too.

The bakery has just launched this adorable Chilli Crab Puff: a flaky crustacean-shaped Danish puff pastry housing tangy-spicy chilli crab filling — apparently made with bits of “real crab” (the PR rep can’t confirm what kind of crab). Also in BreadTalk’s National Day lineup: the Durian Mini Croissant ($1.50 each; $8 for six), pumped with Mao Shan Wang durian puree mixed with cream.

Hello, vegans. This crab-free Chilli ‘Krab’ burger has your name on it. The patty is made with konjac root (also used in konnyaku jelly), coated in bread crumbs and then fried till crispy. It’s slathered with a sweet and tangy chilli crab-inspired sauce made with a shrimp-free rempah blend, veggies and vegan mayo. All tucked in a split wholemeal bun. We think it’s quite delish, though the konjac “crab meat” patty tasted more like fish than crab.

Inspired by the flavours of the traditional Nonya kueh, this crumbly baked-to-order pandan cookie oozes molten gula melaka when you break it apart. It’s showered with grated coconut, and, as if the calories aren’t enough, dolloped with malty Milo Dinosaur Ice Cream. Feeds up to two pax. Oh, and did we mention that the ice cream parlour also serves a Chilli Crab Brownie Cookie packed with homemade chilli crab uh, gravy, served with Bread Toast Ice Cream?

Burger King’s iteration of one of Singapore’s most iconic dishes, chicken rice, is a flame-grilled chicken thigh patty sandwiched between toasted sesame buns with lettuce, savoury ginger sauce and garlic chilli. We tried it and, and while it was a tad too salty, found it fragrant enough. Plus, it does a pretty decent job of tasting like actual chicken rice (sans rice). Also check out BK’s fun new Teh Tarik Pie ($1), an ode to every prata shop's signature beverage.

Sinpopo Brand’s (from the people behind Awfully Chocolate) Dadar Dadar Mille Crepe cake is a combination of the traditional Kueh Dadar, a popular Peranakan kueh (a thin pandan pancake rolled around grated coconut soaked in gula melaka), and the angmoh mille crepe (cake made with layers of crepe and cream). Layers of thin pandan crepe are slathered with gula melaka cream and grated coconut filling. Yum! Aside from the flagship café in Katong which serves both desserts and savoury fare, this new takeaway store in Orchard sells only sweets. Such as other mod Singaporean offerings like an Ondeh Ondeh Cake ($8 a slice; $82 whole), starring crushed gula melaka morsels and sweet potato sponge cake.

The king of fruit goes atas at this Spa Esprit-owned cafe. House-made durian ice cream is paired with pandan chiffon cake, then cloaked with flame-torched pandan meringue decorated like the thorny fruit. It’s served on a thin house-made cracker and a dollop of house-made durian kaya filling.
