These days, granola is not just the domain of veggie-munching hippies or yoga-practicing, 'mindful' millennials. Why, even Nestlé’s Milo is jumping onto this hip breakfast food train, with its new Milo Protein Granola, containing rolled oats.

Nutrition info
Now, you might be wondering if Milo-anything is actually very healthy, ’cos, well, sugar and palm oil (the latter is listed in this granola's ingredients list). Anyhow, the product promises to contain 25% less sugar and 40% more protein than your everyday granola, the latter derived from soy. Wholegrain forms 47.5% of the Lithuanian-manufactured granola: there are oat flakes, wheat flour, corn semolina, oat flour and even rice flour.

The portion
When we open the no-frills packet, we catch a chocolatey whiff of the granola. The packet has a decent air-to-product ratio, unlike some, which are half-filled with air.

The look
The 'granola' is reminiscent of the ‘balls’ from the old Milo Breakfast Cereal range, both shape and texture-wise. Think clusters of slightly larger, puffy orbs with a marginally chewier bite, courtesy of the skimpy smattering of whole oats embedded in them. This is unlike traditionally crunchier, looser, more rustic-textured granola which comprises predominantly healthy rolled oats, nuts and sometimes, dried fruit.

Taste test
It's not too sweet, but only slightly chocolatey, barely resembling a cup of Milo gao. There's a faint maltiness to it, which is quite nice. But this ain’t no fibre-heavy grown-up granola — it’s more of a kid-friendly, airy rice puff-esque cereal. On the bright side, it holds its crispiness quite well. We paired our portion with unsweetened yogurt, and it retained its crunch almost to the last spoonful.

The verdict
Quite nice! We won’t be swapping our usual wholesome oat-heavy granola for this. But we don’t mind snacking on it once in a while (sans milk or yogurt, as those tend to dilute its malty Milo flavour), as a fun snack. Yes, think of this as a treat instead of breakfast.
The Milo Protein Granola ($6.25) is available at all major supermarkets, hypermarkets and selected e-Retailers across Singapore.
