Last year, McDonald’s Hong Kong launched a highly-coveted, limited-edition Hello Kitty mahjong set. It was only for folks in Hong Kong though, as it was an exclusive item there. A little disappointing, but…

Is it worth it to buy?
Mahjong sets can cost as little as S$50 (though we can’t vouch for its quality lah). So at S$228, is McDonald’s My Melody mahjong worth the splurge? In a nutshell, it’s a strong yes.
The very collectable set is Sanrio-fied, starting from the huat McDonald’s-red case that the tiles come in. The case is emblazoned with the golden arches logo and My Melody peeking out from a very familiar takeaway brown paper bag (the same image is repeated for the back of the mahjong tiles).
Forget about annoying relatives’ salary brag; this CNY, the real flex is having enough McDonald’s reward points to even buy this ultra exclusive MJ set, we say.

It is so attention-grabbing, this writer’s mother eagerly came over to snoop. “Aiyoooh, this is very cute. This one good, this one good. Must use brain to play one! You got brain or not? I teach you lah,” she trilled. (The strategic game is popular across generations also because it’s widely believed to improve one’s cognitive function, train patience and relieve stress by socialising with fellow players.)
McDonald’s is also giving My Melody mahjong sets to local community events, some organised by the interesting youth volunteer initiative @sgmahjongtogether, where young volunteers spend time with senior citizens by playing mahjong.

What to expect for the My Melody mahjong set
The My Melody MJ case opens to reveal another surprise: An inner lining featuring the adorable bunny surrounded by McDonald’s iconic menu items.
The tiles, categorised by suits, are properly housed on four golden-hued velvet trays. As it is a Singapore launch, the tiles reflect our local MJ playing style, with the inclusion of animal tiles (the Hong Kong-launched Hello Kitty set did not have ’em, as HK mahjong does not feature those tiles).

The animal tiles consist of four creatures, cat, rat, rooster and centipede, reflecting a predator-prey lore. But instead of the slightly creepy, dated-looking creatures carved on standard mahjong tiles, they are given a very cute makeover (the rat is now a friendly Sanrio mouse, the centipede a happy caterpillar).
Meanwhile, My Melody is repping the flower suit tiles, clutching McDonald’s burgers, hash brown, fried chicken and even a McCafe beverage.

It’s pretty hard to decide which is cuter, but we reckon the bamboo suit tiles should win. The traditional bamboo is swapped out for McDonald’s garlic chilli-dipped fries. The circle suit also gets a fast food revamp, with burger buns, patties and lettuce replacing the wheel. Super duper cute.

McDice and mahjong wind indicator
Even the accompanying MJ accessories like dice and McDonald’s logo wind indicator are adorable. The set comes with pink dice, with a yellow Hello Kitty bow representing the number one.

Lohei bundle
The hilarious McDonald’s Lohei Bundle makes a return, where you get curly fries, nuggets and Chicken McCrispy, plus various condiments and a Happy Meal-style box, to make your own fast food yusheng.
The box can be dismantled to form a large plate, and you are meant to pour everything - including sauces - on it while shouting auspicious phrases and tossing the platter with chopsticks like lohei. The best thing to us? Not hearing complaints from people about having to eat veggies, ’cos nobody turns down fries.
Point redemption for McDonald’s My Melody mahjong set starts from Jan 13, 3pm, and in-person purchase only at Suntec City outlet from Jan 20-23, 3pm-9pm. For more info, go to www.mcdonalds.com.sg.
