McDonald's New Coffee Milk Tea Ice Cream Taste Test: Nice Or Not?

Yuan yang combines coffee and milk tea (hence McDonald’s no-frills, easy-to-understand name for its new dessert flavour). However, this smooth, creamy soft serve barely tastes like a robust cup of yuan yang. Sure, we could detect a faint fragrance of coffee, a light hint of tea and what seems to be dairy creamer in our ice cream cone. But it tastes more like the Golden Arches’ Thai Milk Tea ice cream that was launched last March, with a mild coffee twist.

Since the Coffee Milk Tea soft serve flavour is so muted, we say don’t order it via this twist cone, half of which comprises vanilla soft serve. It tastes like the dessert version of indecision: you enjoy neither McDonald’s rich and pleasant plain vanilla ice cream, nor the new yuan yang flavour.

Hot fudge chocolate is drizzled on yuan yang soft serve for this… but the union is about as compatible as McDonald’s fries with, er, its unique version of salted egg yolk sauce. The cloying chocolate sauce overpowers the delicate yuan yang flavour.

This is our fave pick of the lot: the crunchy bits of blitzed Oreos in our McFlurry perk up the Coffee Milk Tea soft serve, while the yuan yang flavour is a welcome change from the otherwise standard vanilla soft serve-based dessert and imbues the cup with a light toasty note.

Not exactly nice, but not bad either. It ain't as gao and fragrant as a good cup of yuan yang, but slurping up this light coffee-and-tea soft-serve in our current sweltering weather still proves pretty refreshing.
