Fun Mexican-Indian Tacos Like “Sio Bak” Thosai Served At Rapper Yung Raja’s Café

The delicately crispy Indian-inflected taco wraps at The Maha Co are made using a thosai recipe by the rapper’s mum, who comes from Tamil Nadu.

Three-month-old Indian-Mexican cafe The Maha Co oozes street cred — and why not since its co-owner is Singaporean rapper Yung Raja, 27, who shot into the spotlight after his breakout 2018 single Mustafa (which now has close to 2.5 million hits on YouTube)?

Think walls decked out in old-timey movie posters from Bollywood and Mexican cinema; between which lie benches and tables for 30, adorned with colourful Talavera tiles (traditional Mexican ceramic tiles, sourced locally). An open kitchen nestles within a shipping container reconstructed to resemble a street food truck. The rapper (whose real name is Rajid Ahamed) set up The Maha Co with his pal, Quan Ong, 40, who is also the owner of Gorilla Press cold-pressed juices.

On the menu: tacos crafted with Indian dosa – better known in Singapore as thosai – instead of the usual Mexican corn or wheat tortillas.

What mars the vibe a little: the rather sterile office building setting of Fusionopolis at One-North and the incessant rattling of an air-con compressor.
