KFC’s newest launch, the Kentaco, is a taco that switches out the usual doughy tortilla shell with a fried chicken fillet. Blasphemy or blessing? Read on.

The look
The Kentaco comes wrapped with paper for easy handling and fits snugly into our palm as all good tacos should. Of course, it’s bulkier and crustier than a regular taco thanks to its meaty fried chicken instead of a tortilla wrap. A generous amount of shredded lettuce, tomato, and most importantly, cheese is crammed into its pocket. The grated mozzarella and cheddar cheese sprinkled on the top had melted by the time the delivery guy reached us, so it was a bit messy. But still, it looked promising.

Kentaco Taste Test, $5.95 each; $7.95 for a meal
KFC’s PR rep tells us that the chicken shell isn’t cooked using the Original Recipe but is instead “marinated chicken fried to crispy perfection”. It looks very thick, but we were able to bite into it comfortably, and all the ingredients within were snugly held in place without falling out. The chook tasted pretty similar to KFC’s Popcorn Chicken — slightly peppery and briny with a hint of spice, and with a thicker, crunchier batter. The breast meat was a touch dry, but still boasted a pretty crisp skin despite sitting out for a while. Meanwhile, the lettuce added a nice refreshing crunch, and the tomatoes a welcome tartness. But as cheese fiends, we never thought we’d say this — but there was a tad too much cheese. There’s shredded mozzarella and cheddar on top, plus a creamy cheese sauce made with cheddar, romano, and emmanthal. It got a bit jelak after a while.

The verdict
Not bad. We would’ve preferred it if the chicken were cooked using the more flavourful Original Recipe. But this is still worth a try ’cos it’s quite fun to eat.
