He Couldn’t Find A Decent Job In UK, So China-Born Uni Grad Sold ‘Chinese Burgers’ Instead
Popular rougamo chain Murger Han from London has opened its first outlet in S’pore. “As a Chinese person in a Western country, you don't have many opportunities. Even with proper qualifications you can’t find a good job,” says its Xi'an-born founder who lived in the UK for 20 years.
With four outlets across London, Murger Han is a popular UK-based eatery that specialises in rougamo (which translates to ‘meat burger’), a traditional Chinese snack of chopped meat stuffed in flatbread made with wheat flour and yeast. It’s believed to have been around since the Qin dynasty and originated in the Shaanxi province of China. Some folks even hailed it as “the world’s first hamburger”. While the bread may look similar to prata, it’s often baked in a clay oven rather than pan-fried in China. On 16 December, the UK chain opened its first overseas outlet in Singapore at Robinson Road.
