Singapore is home to many Japanese F&B imports, and the latest brand to set up shop on our shores is Gyukatsu Kyoto Katsugyu.
The amusingly-named casual restaurant chain from Kyoto specialises in its namesake gyukatsu — the beef version of the popular tonkatsu (deep-fried pork cutlet).

Choose your own cut
According to a press release shared with 8days.sg, the restaurant serves “only carefully selected lean cuts of thick, juicy beef” deep-fried to medium rare doneness.
To make ’em crispy, the beef cutlets are coated in a koromo batter with layers of egg wash, flour and bread crumbs.

Customers can choose from a variety of beef cuts such as sirloin, chuck, tenderloin and tongue, or opt for wagyu beef. If you can’t decide, you can also go for a half-and-half combination, or a grill-it-yourself option.

How to eat the gyukatsu
The gyukatsu here comes with numerous condiments, including Kyoto-Style Curry, Fresh Wasabi and Onsen Egg, with a runny yolk that serves as a dip. There’s also Dashi Soy Sauce, Sansho Pepper Salt and a proprietary Gyukatsu Sauce.
If you order the set meal, you get rice, cabbage, red miso soup, spicy chilli miso, onsen egg and Kyoto-style curry (characterised by its mild spiciness and is heavier on herbs and veggies).
Gyukatsu Kyoto Katsugyu’s first Singapore outlet opens in early September at #B1-63/64 Raffles City Shopping Centre, 252 North Bridge Rd, S179103.
