Godiva Chocolatier's First Sit-Down Cafe In Singapore, Plus More New Eateries To Check Out This Weekend

Belgian waffles with Godiva's superb soft serve, truffle la mian and, um, crocodile's paw for your makan consideration. (A version of this story first appeared in Issue 1390, June 8, 2017.)

Godiva Chocolatier's First Sit-Down Cafe In Singapore, Plus More New Eateries To Check Out This Weekend

1. Godiva Chocolatier Cafe

#B1-05 Ion Orchard, 2 Orchard Turn, S238801. Open daily 10am-10pm. Last orders at 9.30pm. www.godiva.com.sg

Can’t get enough of chocolate specialist Godiva’s to-die-for dark choc soft serve
ice cream? Now you can sit and savour it at its first dine-in cafe in Southeast Asia. The sleek 40-seater is located beside In Good Company’s cafe by Plain Vanilla at Ion Orchard, and serves Singapore-exclusive desserts like Belgium Waffle with Godiva Soft Serve ($14; below pic) and Chocolate Fondant with Vanilla Soft Serve ($14). Godiva takeaway shops’ usual soft serve cones are available here too, like a Chocolate Twist Soft Serve ($9), a combination of chocolate and vanilla soft serve (but we say go for the superior plain chocolate alone!). Or get fondue sets such as the Dark Chocolate Fondue Set ($45; feeds two pax) served with fruits, macarons and marshmallows. Wash it down with an Earl Grey Hot Chocolate ($9).
2. The Dragon Chamber

#03-01 Plaza Singapura, 68 Orchard Rd, S238839. Tel: 6884-4566. Open daily 5.30pm-10pm. Last orders at 9.30pm. www.tunglok.com

Cheeky Chinese restaurant Lokkee — owned by the Tung Lok Group — has a mission to make Chinese food great again. And that’s via The Dragon Chamber, a speakeasy-style mini restaurant and bar tucked within Lokkee and decked out to resemble a Chinese triad’s dingy hideout. You enter the chamber through a “secret entrance” decorated with dragons. Its nose-to-tail a la carte menu serves more exotic food than Lokkee’s (you can still order off Lokkee’s menu but not vice versa). Think grub like Dragon’s Claw ($60), a single foot from a Singapore-farmed crocodile braised in herbal sauce, and Josper Grilled Pig’s Tail ($26) cooked in a Josper oven. But there are also tamer dishes like

Curry Fries ($10) and Mala Irish Duck ($36 for half) drenched in house-made mala sauce. Tipples include a Mandarin Mojito ($15) with rum, mint leaves and fresh mandarin orange juice.

3. Savourworld

Westies, here’s another makan spot for you to pig out at with your squad. Savourworld brings together over 20 restaurants under one roof, each eatery specialising in a different type of cuisine with its own designated sitting area. The enclave is run by the folks behind gourmet food festival Savour and Wildfire Burgers at 313@Somerset. There are currently eight joints open, including mod Chinese restaurant Blue Lotus’s spinoff brand, the Chinese Noodle Bar, offering dishes like Crispy Pork Lard Truffle La Mian ($12), and new French-Japanese ramen specialist Ramen Atelier, opened by the former head chef of Wildfire Burgers.

Other brands slated to open in July include new artisanal ice cream shop Licktionary, offering flavours like the chrysanthemum tea-infused Peace ($3.80 a scoop). Order your food, pay and eat at the individual restaurant spaces. Or you can bring your food to the communal dining area to enjoy a wider variety of nosh with your pals. Savourworld will also roll out a gourmet village selling food products, as well as cooking classes.

4. Seoi Gor Cafe

#01-357, 45 Holland Dr, S270045. Tel: 6266-0366. Open daily Mon-Fri 9am-9pm; Sat & Sun 9am-10pm. Last orders 30 mins before closing.

This quaint Hong Kong-style cha chaan teng near Holland Village with a neon signboard and vintage tiles gives us major Mongkok feels. It's owned by RTG Holdings, the folks behind brands like LiHo (which takes over the defunct Gong Cha franchise run by the same company), and Nene Chicken.

The 30-seater also marks the group’s first venture into Hong Kong cuisine, offering classics such as Thick Toast with Scrambled Eggs and Ham ($4.50; above pic), Hong Kong Milk Tea ($1.90 for hot; $2.40 cold) and street snacks like Curry Fishball Skewers ($5 for three skewers).
