Feisty 81-Year-Old Makes Kueh Lapis & Rempah At Peranakan Cafe Daily; ‘Scolds’ Son For Buying ‘Wrong’ Onions
“I was really very angry [at his suggestion]. That big onion is very watery and has no fragrance,” protests the matriarch behind Marie’s Lapis Cafe. “Every time we talk about onions, I want to cry,” jokes her son. The popular Peranakan eatery in Bedok has opened a new outlet in Raffles Place.
Elegantly dressed in a vibrant kebaya, 81-year-old nonya Marie Yeo is the inspiration behind Marie’s Lapis Cafe, a 24-seat cafe founded by her son Christopher Lim, 60, in 2020. Situated in an HDB block in Bedok North, the cosy Peranakan eatery specialises in kueh lapis and nonya kueh made by Marie. She also prepares the various rempah (spice blends) for Peranakan staples like ayam buah keluak and beef rendang.
In case it wasn’t already evident, Marie is a remarkable lady. During her chat with 8days.sg, the nonya matriarch didn’t hold back. “I didn’t know that he (Chris) was naming the cafe after me. He doesn’t tell me anything! I only found out when I saw the cafe. He also told everyone that the opening day coincided with my birthday. Now, everyone knows that too,” she jests with mock exasperation.
Chris, the ‘culprit’, defends his actions: “After a 11-month delay due to Covid-related issues, we finally opened in November 2020. I saw it as a positive sign that we received approval to open the cafe named after my mum on her birthday, and I wanted to share that joy with everyone.”
