Don't snigger — it's serious business. Especially when the centre of the storm revolves around beloved local hawker stall Eng's Wantan Noodle, which the late hawker Ng Ba Eng started and built up at Dunman Food Centre in the '70s. Customers adored the stall's springy noodles, juicy wontons and his famously fiery chilli sauce that’s so feisty, some diners had to get their noodles replaced after foolishly dousing it in too much of the hot stuff.

Mr Ng later relocated his eatery to 287 Tanjong Katong Road with an investor's help in 2012, where he continued serving a steady stream of loyal customers until he passed away from a heart attack in 2013. His son Desmond Ng, 48, took over the business after his death.

In 2016, due to differing views in running the business, Desmond parted ways with his father's biz partner. A bitter court case to dissolve the business ensued.

In the meantime, soup chain Lao Huo Tang, Group took over the lease for the shop and re-opened the eatery in April after a brief hiatus earlier this year to renovate the space.

Less than a week ago, Desmond set up his own restaurant, called Eng's Char Siew Wantan Mee at 248 Tanjong Katong Road, right across the road from the older Eng's eatery. His two sisters were roped in to help run the new space.

The new Eng's opened to much fanfare recently on May 13. While its menu, food presentation and decor look almost identical to the old Eng's, and prices and portions are kept exactly the same, the newcomer boasts air-conditioning to attract refugees of our blistering weather.

The result of all this drama? Wonton mee lovers in the east now have two Eng's noodle shops to choose from. But with limited tummy space, which one should you go for? Check out our undercover taste test at the two eateries in the video above for our verdict!
