Red-light district Geylang has a reputation for ‘chickens’ and ‘ducks’, euphemisms for female and male sex workers plying their trade there. But the area is just as well-known for actual food — you’d have to go to Geylang for an excellent plate of Swee Guan Hokkien Mee, Eminent Frog Porridge, 126 Dim Sum and zi char master JB Ah Meng.

A new eatery joining the enclave is Ducking Good, which is described as a “one-stop duck specialist restaurant for all things duck”. Opened by the folks behind Boeuf Steakhouse, the restaurant offers duck meat done in “no less than 10 ways”, like roasted, braised, salted, fried, spiced or cooked in soup.

The irony of opening a ‘duck shop’ in Geylang is not lost on Ducking Good’s young chef-owner Carlos Gan, 28, who reckons that his restaurant serves comfort food catering to the same crowd that flock to Geylang for frog porridge or Hokkien mee. He quips: “It's good fun and punny to strategically open a ‘duck shop’ in Geylang. People will remember it better!”

For something more unusual, Ducking Good also offers the old-school Hokkien-style Signature Salted Duck ($20/ $39/ $69), which is wrapped in a salt cast to cook to impart a briny flavour. Can’t decide? You can also get a sampler platter for $39 (two types of duck) or $49 (three types of duck).

Crispy Spiced Duck Leg Confit
There’s also Spicy Kou Shui Duck ($9.90), a mod take on the Sichuan classic dish kou shui ji (which literally means ‘saliva chicken’ in Chinese). It features slices of cold duck served with a garlicky Sichuan chilli dressing. For a Western take, there is also Crispy Spiced Duck Leg Confit ($9.90).

If you prefer something soupy, there are six soup options on the menu including Dang Shen Tonic ($13.90) and Ba Zhen Tonic ($13.90) as well as Salted Vege Duck Soup ($9.90). The latter is served in a claypot.

Salted Duck Claypot Porridge
For those looking for a fuss-free meal, there are $9.90 individual set meals like Salted Duck Claypot Porridge, Signature Braised Duck Rice and Herbal Roast Duck Rice, which come with your choice of iced or hot tea and a soup of the day.
The restaurant serves alcohol with an all-day Happy Hour. For $9.90++, you can get a pint of draft beer like Guinness and Heineken, or a glass of house pour red or white wine.

For its opening, Ducking Good is running a month-long promotion from Apr 20 to May 17, where you can get 50 per cent off a whole signature duck (usual price $69, limited to one redemption per table). The type of duck offered changes weekly, but the last week of the promotion features a Triple Duck Platter (usual price $49) or a quarter speciality duck (usual price $20) instead.
