Our favourite new place for sophisticated café grub — especially its gourmet grain bowls.

It’s already over a month old, but Clan Café — the only space open to the public at Singapore’s coolest new members-only club, Straits Clan — is still the hottest cafe in town. Come at lunch, especially on a Saturday, and you’re likely to find yourself waiting for a table, or at least trying to queue patiently as the panicky staff (timorous trainees on two of the three occasions we visited) struggle to key in your orders at what seems to be a complex POS system.

While you wait, you can feast your eyes on young influencer wannabes posing against the beautiful floral arrangements (courtesy of stylish florist, Humid House, beside the cafe) that anoint the equally ravishing 50-seat space, which was formerly New Majestic Hotel.

Designed by local studio Takenouchi Webb, the club’s interiors are gorgeously decked in polished brass, shades of green that run from mint to moss, and tropical-colonial wood-and-rattan accents. Meanwhile, servers are stylishly outfitted in smart olive green jackets over white shirts and chinos: think hipsters with class.

The club’s main co-founders are Wee Teng Wen (UOB heir who’s behind the The Lo & Behold Group) and Aun Koh (co-founder of The Ate Group). The food here is simple, with sandwiches, grain bowls and broths forming the backbone of the menu conceived by consultant chef Jeremy Nguee and talented but underrated executive French chef David Thien, the latter formerly exec chef of Shelter in the Woods and the TWG chain of cafes. There’s also a range of cocktails, coffee, iced teas, and herbal tea blends concocted by local tea purveyors A.muse Projects.

The full menu is only available till a very early 6pm (this may change in future), after which the café serves drinks and just three snacks, including the much-Instagrammed otah sandwich.
